Yes, I had exactly the same experience when I was 13. To tell the truth, I was much more interested in Rhett Butler than in what was going on with the slaves. Mea culpa.
At least you took the time to educate yourself...there are
many people who still cling to the whole "moonlight and magnolias" depiction of slavery!
I've got introduced to the problem as a very young child with The Uncle Tom''s Cabin. I read Gone with the Wind as a romance, I was lovesick for a long time....
