Imogen I agree. There are some truly horrific scenes, as can only be expected with the topic of the book, but they are mostly brief and I found it manageable. The author certainly focuses more on Cora and her emotions throughout her journey.

Linda FitzGerald are you kidding me Kristen. None of the above answers are as you state. Violence was a typical, constant, oart of slavery. Full STOP. That is what the commenters are stating.

Tafadzwa Maposa I would say the author focuses as much on the violence enacted on slaves and freed men and women as he does on Cora's emotions. They kind of go hand in hand.
Cora's emotions are a reaction to the violence and exploitation she witnesses and is made aware of.

Allison So the "brief description" of the slave being castrated and then set on fire...it was just "touching on" exploitation?
