Kaitlin Terry, I just finished the book a few minutes ago and immediately went to Goodreads to see if anyone made sense of the ending. I think you perfectly summarized the sense I was getting by the final chapter of the book - while a lot of the memories got in the way of tracking the storyline, it makes more sense when a multiple personality theory is introduced

Lynda Bangham I thought this as well but snag on the parents thanking her and the dairy queen cashier warning

Nothing Like A Great Book Glad I read this Spoiler before purchasing this book. It's too dismal for words, regardless of how 'clever' some seem to think it. I need a HEA or at least a HFN. Thanks. 🌹

Alexa M. I agree, I just finished reading this twisted novel and I think its such a great book to dissect. Jake always mentioned that "Pretty much all memory is fiction and heavily edited. So just keep going".

If you understand this notion and re-read the book, everything that happened in his 'diary' is a mix of both his reality and his made up persona's reality. The girls at DQ could've been an interpretation of him being bullied from young kids at the school he worked at because of his rash on his hands and neck.

The story about the driving instructor, could've been his longing for intimacy and loneliness. When he mentioned the girl that "is the best kisser" he grew very upset when the 'girlfriend' said that it takes two to make a great kiss.

His parents and home is a mix of reality, the parents was his anchor to his illness and the fact that there was no mirror in the bathroom may have portrayed because he does not want to see that he is his own reflection when narrating as the girlfriend (hence why she also didn't want to see her reflection in the car window on the drive to the farmhouse). When he walked around the farm with his girlfriend, it could have been his representation of reminiscing his past from living in the farmhouse and portraying it to his story/diary.

When reading the italic parts backwards by sentence, it also gives a WHOLE NEW PREMISE on his character and state of mind.

Very good book philosophically and a great image on mental illness, reality and manipulated perspective.

Hannah Rose Hey Terry, the part of your answer that you marked as "spoilers" are showing up like normal. I've already finished the book but could you maybe edit that for other people who have yet to finish it? Thank you and thanks for the interesting quote! :)

Sandy I watched the film twice and then read the book. The film is just about as confusing but there were visual clues so it helped guide me. I vote the film being better than the book, but that is just me.
