Carmen You know why I am mad, bc there are thousands erotic writers way better than her, who did do their research about S/M, who understand S/M, that they have been published, like Jade Black and Claire Thompson. And I tell you why they haven't received their due, bc they paint S/M and erotism as something good, why this child painted as something negative, the whole book she tries for Grey to stop doing S/M, oh its bc he has issues he does it, Im sorry but not everyone who does S/M has issues, this book is only popular bc is conservative with a erotic mask, it goes with the social standards, plus is a copy, she stole everything, from twilight characters to even the names, I can not even forgive him for ridiculing Grey my favorite character from the movie the secretary.

Reborn Well-read people read everything, especially when someone has had this much of an effect on the culture in which we live. That is why we read it and that is also why we are vocal about how really and truly awful it is.

message 3: by Elle (new)

Elle Yes, well unfortunately no matter how we work to avoid it we still encounter it from people who run around yelling 'OMG Christian Grey is just like the hottest thing since the sparkly vampires!' So, as long as people push it in our face we get to complain.

Stacy S. How can we make the judgment of hating this book if we don't read it?
I don't understand why people say, "don't like it, don't read it". That's like saying I hate hamburgers even though I've never eaten one.

message 5: by Reborn (new)

Reborn Exactly, Stacy! I read the books (all three -- well, listened to the audios, anyway) specifically so when I criticize them, no one can say, "But you didn't even read them."

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Perhaps people are upset about it because, hmm, the terrible representation of BDSM has wound up getting people killed because the author defends her portrayal of an abusive relationship that fails SSC as actually being BDSM?

message 7: by Stacy (new)

Stacy S. Exactly, Renee and Jeff.
It's poorly written and inaccurate. Of course, fan girls say it's because I'm jealous of her. That was the biggest laugh I've had all day. That would mean I aspire to write like her. My 9th grade short story was better written.

message 8: by Reborn (new)

Reborn If I hated books based on their success because I was jealous, then I wouldn't count Harry Potter and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy among my all-time favorites. Ridiculous. I also absolutely loved The Help. I like well-written books. And even if I don't enjoy a story but I think it was well done, I will give it at least three stars because something not being my taste doesn't mean it wasn't done well. These books are barely passable as writing. She shouldn't be allowed to call herself a writer because she isn't really. She's someone who wrote something and a lot of people do that as well (or badly) as she did.

message 9: by Stacy (new)

Stacy S. So true, Renee. There are best sellers I love. They deserve to be called 'Authors'.
But, I don't think it would be fair to compare my books and James'. I write in the Paranormal Genre. James doesn't. She wrote fanfic. I'm not really fond of fanfic and wouldn't consider writing any. I like my own ideas.

message 10: by Reborn (new)

Reborn LOL Definitely. :-) Honestly, though, I mean, I'm not a sci-fi fan at all, but that doesn't mean there isn't good sci-fi out there. I don't really read romance or erotica, either, but again, there is probably good stuff out there. This just is not it.

message 11: by Stacy (new)

Stacy S. Agreed. I can't even consider it a book.

message 12: by Kim (new)

Kim Platt "Don't read it if you don't like it" has to be the worst argument. Why? Because when something becomes so saturated in pop culture that it's around on TV, the radio, online, etc... it becomes thrown into the public eye. That said, I didn't manage to get too far into it. Maybe enough to get a stylistic taste, but not the full effect of the story. 25 pages is a very small sample considering the book's length, I'll admit. But, I don't think that I would have managed much more had I tried to read the book more seriously, thus why I borrowed it instead of buying it. Most people uninterested will choose not to read it on their own, but there are those who might be curious or have this thing where they'd rather read or watch it to look at both sides. There's nothing wrong with doing that as it provides for interesting conversation.

In the end, the sample I read just didn't hook me. The topic and the idea doesn't bother me, but I can hardly take Anastasia seriously from the few pages that I was introduced to her in.

message 13: by R.A. (new)

R.A. it is not just about the concept of the book but the poor writing skills of the author.

message 14: by Reborn (new)

Reborn The concept really doesn't bother me at all. I mean, I attempted to read The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty and that makes Fifty Shades look like a kids' book as far as the sex goes. I had to stop because it was too much for me, but I won't criticize it because the WRITING was good and it wasn't pretending to be a romance novel while really being a horror story. lol

Shalva Sultanishvili To Funny. If you do not like it do not read ?
