I actually really enjoyed the Black Company. It does have similarities to Malazan and it is a great series in its own right. I had plenty of moments of holding back tears reading The Black Company as well. It isn't on the same level as Malazan but I have not found anything that is so that isn't much of a drawback.
I'm now hearing great things from other MBOTF fans about The Poppy War by RF Kuang.
