"Most books are in cities or larger towns"? IDK, I've been to plenty of small town libraries. And, plenty of small town hardware stores. Whether I could build a non-gasoline generator is an open question, but perhaps that's one thing our society can get better at going forward; moving toward more normalized solar/kinetic electric production.
I have two solar-powered batteries that charge any device that uses a USB. I use them for my phone and camera when I'm camping. It takes a while for the battery to fully charge, but it will easily power a phone for hours of use. Camping stores and outdoor-outfitter stores are full of stuff like this along with guides of what native plants are edible and how to prepare and preserve them.
In middle school science they made us make a 1.5 volt battery from common items. I don't remember how, but it's in textbooks and easy enough for a 13-year-old to do.
