I feel so dumb. Loved the book. Couldn't put it down. But I totally missed the meaning of the red room end, please explain.
It's Ester's way of telling Grace that she knew what Jack's intent was. He had initially said in front of Ester that Millie's room would be yellow, then twice said it was Red, and Ester called him on that to clarify. He denied saying it was red. At the end, Adam tells Ester about the Red Room in the basement with the horrible paintings, and since Millie has told Ester how she fell from the stairs, and she hates "Clooney", Ester puts it all together, & asks Grace what color is Millie's room? When Grace responds "red", it is clear to Ester what Jack's intent was (to imprison Mille in that red room), and it's also clear to Grace that Ester knows. At least that's my take on it.
