I will dispute this. I really did not enjoy most of WOT, but read it because I wanted to read all your writing. I enjoyed books 3, 4, and 11, but the rest were slogs. Then came your books and, in my opinion, they became incredible from the first chapter. Every page excited me. It was in your books where I really became engaged with many of the characters for the first time. Was it worth reading 8+ books I didn't enjoy? Maybe, maybe not. But for a Sanderson fanboy like myself (Fanderson?), I'm glad I did.
For the person who wrote the question, you might also visit Tor.com, and look for the Wheel of Time Re-read link in the right-hand nav column. That, along with reference material from Encyclopaedia-wot.org, will get you a strong synopsis for the story if your goal is to read the final three volumes and maintain continuity of what everything means. But wow, you will miss a hundred foreshadows and more that really make the details of the final volumes worth the effort.
I suffered through the whole 11 books purely in order to enjoy yours, Mr Sanderson, so I hope so much that you are wrong in what you say :) About to start The Gathering Storm now.
Suffering is the right word for books 9 through 11. Pace of change and removal of repetition was most welcome afterwards.
