Interestingly, I just read the 10th anniversary edition, and Gaimen tells the story differently. He said the film rights had been purchased, but he had no idea when it would be produced. I didn't compare dates of publication vs. movie release.
I agree - they are both good without one being notably better. There are differences and they follow very closely, but one is not significantly better or worse.
Check the publication date for the book. The original publication year is 2002 or 2003. If you check the release info for the movie, it came out in 2009.
