Ken As a reader, one makes up their own rules. I prefer to suspend judgement, then reflect on a book once I finish. The protagonist here certainly seems to be going through some sort of crisis, and has walked away from his responsibilities and taken up with a fallen woman. I think he might be going through an existential crisis, defined in Wikipedia as "a moment at which an individual questions the very foundations of their life: whether this life has any meaning, purpose, or value."

Steve Cruz I disagree 100%. A book is not judged simply by the measure of whether you can sympathize with the main character. The writing style is pretty amazing. The metaphors. The guy wrote poetry, you can tell. His sentence structures/punctuation are inventive. There are just too many interesting passages in this book -- especially in the how they're written -- to tell folks to take a pass on it.
