Being a big fan of Tamora Pierce's books, I'd have to say that this series is nothing like her Song of the Lioness series. It is a completely different plot, feel, and quality of character. That being said, I'm sure it will come at no surprise when I say I agree to go read the Song of the Lioness instead and other books by Pierce. That is what a quality strong female lead looks like (and if you want to get even better, check out her Protector of the Small series).
