Leanne I disagree. Just because the relationship was strained and distant, doesn't mean there was no relationship. It feels like everything in their lives together was strained -- her father's relationship with his son, poverty, war, mother and daughter relationship. There is no doubt that there was love between mother and daughter and it seems that her mother did what she thought was right given the circumstances. It wasn't stated outright, but it seems like there was marital tension for her mother and father and that perhaps her mother followed the father's lead.

Julia Sutton Yes, I think that is the miracle, or perhaps an expected outcome, that Lucy would be determined to nurture closeness with her own children.
