Don't know if you've read it yet, but a great book. Two of the most memorable female protagonists I've ever run across.

I'd say the monsters the UN create with the proto-molecule are Caliban in this - the monstrous servants of an over-confident master, who is meddling with things best left alone. In The Tempest, Caliban is enslaved by the wizard Prospero, kept controlled by debilitating stomach cramps. Caliban attempted to rape Prospero's daughter Miranda, & says that if Prospero hadn't stopped him he'd have "peopled this isle with Calibans". In Caliban's war, (view spoiler)[the monsters are kept under tenuous control by implanted explosives, and if they come into contact with humans there's every chance that the proto-molecule that infects them & gives them their horrific speed & strength will infect those they touch & turn them into similar horrors. Yup. Your answer is much more thorough than mine - I'm lazy. Also, don't be so sure the proto-molecule monsters are UN creation.....

Point taken. I kind of generalize to "we did it to ourselves.." but I don't want to say too much because I don't know how to hide spoilers... hope you enjoy the series as much as I have.
