I think you hit the head of the nail. It's less about age, and more about what any individual kid can handle. Though I think 10 might be too young, I'm saying this as a parent of an 8 year old. I read the book initially when I was 15; I might have read it when I was around 13, but I didn't know it existed until a friend gave it to me for my birthday. It seemed just right for me at 15, but I was a sheltered child.
