Honestly I'm glad you chose not to explain! I love how the ending can be two totally different ones depending on the reader and one's interpretation! :)
I loved the subtle suggestions in the ending. this was the first book I read in 2016 and it's set a high bar for the rest of the year's reading. Thank you for a wonderful experience (BTW I first read about the book on The Onion's AV Club Year's Best Books List 2015)
Hmmm...putting two and two together...the "exorcist team" wanted Merry in the room with Marjorie because the spirit events seemed to happen with Merry there. The room turns cold during the exorcism when Merry is there. Her media room at her adult house has red walls, black bookcases, and lots of supernatural and possession media. And, of course, the coffee shop at the end of the book turns from "steamy warm" to cold enough to see one's breath. I didn't think Merry might have been the one possessed by an evil spirit until the end with the poisoning and, of course, the cold coffee shop. That's my take anyway. Makes me want to read it again and look for the clues.
