         I think the onus is on the writer (and editor) to be sensitive about what readers need drawn out a little more. It could have used a line or two of explanation and it's something that pulled you out of the story and caused you to question. That's a bad thing and interferes with enjoyment of the story. If you stumbled over it, it's safe to say other people will stumble over it. So now I know.
