Lisa I agree! I am an atheist as well, and the book is one of my favourites simply because it is a fantastic piece of fiction. I can see there are some references to Christian faith, but I read it in the same way I read magical realism (Marquez, Rushdie, Mo Yan, etc), and as such it is brilliant. I think conservative Christians might have more issues with it, considering the sexuality, language and sense of humour.
