A little too neatly and unbelievably in my opinion.
Krista: True, the ending was a bit trite but a good overall read nonetheless. Would appreciate some recommendations for even better reads. Can't seem to find truly amazing books anymore. I liked Shadow of the Wind by Ruis Zafron, would appreciate your take on that one.
Marilyn/Krista: I'm not crazy about this one, will give it 3 stars but it was just too confusing and too much work to read. Wanted to tell you the "Shadow of the Wind" is wonderful. Here is my review and some quotes from the book....
"A story is a letter the author writes to himself, to tell himself things that he would be unable to discover otherwise."
"Few things are more deceptive than memories."
"Those who really love, love in silence, with deeds rather than words."
"Memories are worse than bullets."
Review
A friend of mine was reading this book and was enthralled by it; it was keeping her up at night so she told me the basic plot and asked me to read it. I did and I loved it! It reminds me of some of the older novels that just seemed to have more depth than many of today's do.
I read a comment somewhere that said this novel is "A dream date for those who love books." I would agree although as it went on, it did lose one star of the 5 that I thought I would give it. I was so enthusiastic about the plot in the beginning and then when I finished, I felt slightly disappointed. I had to go back a few times and reread passages and I'm not sure why since the book was long and slightly repetitive (the confusion may be the reader's fault, not the author's). I wish I was more familiar with the Spanish Civil War and Barcelona because that may have shed a little more light on the historical aspect of the novel. I've seen complaints about the way he ended the story but he did tie it all up which many authors don't do these days.
Fumero (bad guy) reminded me of Inspector Javert in "Les Mis" except this guy is really horrible.
Fermine (good guy)brought some comic relief to the story and is one of my new favorite characters in literature.
Lots of good quotes and I've flagged many parts of my copy.
I'm going to read the author's novel "The Angel's Game" and I hope that it has the depth and is as interesting as this one. The cover of my hard copy is one of the best I've ever seen - shelves of books!!!
Wonderful! Here is my review...
