Agreed. One of the things I like about the book is that the author explains each of the things you need to know to appreciate the current story, without making the recap annoying for those of us who have read from book one.
While the stories are standalone, I feel you'd miss a lot of the richness that comes from such a long series of books. Especially one where the character development has been really outstanding.
