I don't remember reading that she was pregnant? However she was extra fertile from gnawing on those trees and she had that interaction in the hammock. Plus she was grieving the loss of Easter. So it is entirely possible she could be pregnant. I like that Marina's future is in our heads to determine. Whatever her future is, it would be a shame to see her return to pharmacology work in Minnesota.
Since it ended the next day after her only opportunity to get pregnant, it couldn't possibly have been known. But I did think it possible. And weird.
She did not have a desire to chew the bark that morning, which was mentioned earlier as a indicator of pregnancy.
*Spoiler*
Yeah, Sal's got it. Habitually chewing bark (fertility) + hooking up with Anders + not craving bark after hookup = implication of pregnancy.
On a personal note, I think they should've come up with a plan to get Easter back (or not have lost him to begin with), Swenson should've died (childbirth?), Marina should've stayed as the replacement. Anders can still go home to be with his family. Or Marina and Anders could've stayed together in the jungle and raised Easter together while they see the project through. I would've been ok with that alternative as well.
I wondered about her being pregnant also....and, falling in love with Anders. When she witnessed his reunion with his family she realized there was no room in his life for her, personally or professionally. And, Mr Fox was or....she became aware of his true colors when he arrived in Brazil! I imagine she went back to Brazil, Easter returned to the Lakashi, and she took over for her mentor, Dr Swenson.
I'm sure Patchett was trying to leave in our heads the idea that Marina could be pregnant, even if it wasn't explicit. Otherwise why write that she and Anders have that one night together, when Marina will now be fertile.
