It's still a bit of a mystery to me. (more spoiler alerts ) Were Leo Gursky and Zvi Litvanoff, in at least part of the book, the same person. Or in his head, were they the same person, so he could make sense of the pain in his life?
Also was the young Alma, in some way related to him? Did she meet a replacement for the lost father, or was it him?

How do you actually know Bruno was imaginary?

Yes, how did you find out Bruno was imaginary? I would lie to go back and re- read that section if anyone can guide me.
