I remember reading Gödel, Escher, Bach back when I was in college (not assigned reading... just on my own). I stopped reading on page 328 of my 1989 edition, and my marginal note on that pages explains the philosophical error that the author made (with the underlined passage in the text where he expressed the error). At that point, the rest of his argument could not be proven valid, so I gave up :-)
