Heathcliff was a monster long before Cathy died, though. In her words... '"He's not a rough diamond – a pearl-containing oyster of a rustic; he's a fierce, pitiless, wolfish man." He'd hung Isabel's dog just to prove to her how weak she was in not being able to stop him - emotionally, not physically. I believe it was the kitchen scene, where Cathy says that it would degrade her to marry Heathcliff, that broke him.
