Sydney Correct. You have to consider the time period and the setting. Read the whole book. The movie would clarify this for you too.

C Jane Run for me, it speaks to discretion as opposed to a lack of intimacy between idgie and ruth. no other couple's sex life was talked about either.

Tamara Speelmon I am pretty sure they are lesbians, and I'm sure that Fanny wrote the characters to be so. However, at this time there was a common term "Boston Marriage" and was not uncommon. I am positive a lot of women in these relationships were lesbians, but not all.

Tamara Speelmon At this time there was a common term "Boston Marriage", and it was not uncommon for single women to live together. I am positive a lot of women in these relationships were lesbians, but not all. However, since the author is gay I am pretty sure she wrote the characters as such.

Kaitlin Finally, someone understands.

Fluffster Flagg confirmed many years ago that their relationship was romantic and in the book, she even writes Idgie is “as happy as anybody who is in love in the summertime can be.”
I don't see how it can be any clearer.
