Guys tend to make friends with guys, especially around Kvothe's age. It makes sense that he is mostly surrounded by guys, but there are some females there, too. Fela, Mola, Felurian, Vashet, Devi, Auri, Kvothe's mom, Lanre's girl.
P. Rothfuss creates a whole society (Admere) where the WOMEN are far, far, far better fist / sword fighters than the men, and in fact the women run the schools that teach this fighting secret style, and these schools are the utter foundation of the whole society's wealth....but women get on here and complain about his female characters and complain that the hero of the story (Kvothe) is best in bed. Let that be a lesson to you all...you can never make a woman happy...never...no matter how hard you try...no matter how hard you work.
