They happened in the world that the writer created. So, yes. They did happen for real.
Part of me thinks it really did happen and being privileged he could get away with it....also the 'yuppies' absorbed by the material culture all start to look the same and one can't tell one from the other....
It is good that it is open. One can see that being the explanation, I like to think he is deranged. Because of the emptiness he feels he thinks he is actually subverting his kind of life, his calm.
spot on Edwin if Patrick Bateman is deranged because of the emptiness created by the frenetic world we live in then i guess most of us are deranged and disconnected from ourselves and those around us - chasing our tails in the rat race....how it manifests for each of us is what differs i suppose
