Melissa I actually enjoyed the scene where Tom described the way in which he would continue to fight for their people. I thought the other brother Al was more symbolic of a selfish worthless young man. I do agree though, Ma was an unforgettable & impressive character! And, Rose of Sharon, though so focused on herself through the whole story finally seemed to emulate her strong mother in this very last scene. It felt like the passing of the torch.

Daniel YES! You found the real theme of this novel!

Greg Ben, Melissa, Daniel, at first, that final scene felt wrong/odd, then it clicked into place, and with it the force of the book.

Charles Bill McKenny I had the same feeling that Ma was the real hero.

Greg Charles, yes, but I didn't see it/get it till the final pages. It was the stupendous strength of women that literally saves everyone.

Marilyn Ma is very definitely the hero of the family and the story.
