I thought the contrast between the two time periods was interesting in that Rahima was part of the early parliament in Afghanistan, whereas Shekiba worked for the Sultan, guarding his harem. While I enjoyed learning about Shekiba, I think there's a nice balance in the book, without too many "flashbacks" to detract from the main story of Rahima.
