Keely I don't think at all that the director didn't understand the book, You have to consider how nearly impossible it is to translate onto the screen the kind of emotional and mental changes Kitty went through, so it shifted some of the focus onto the drama of Walter's work. That provided a more visual way of portraying how and why Kitty's feelings toward him could have changed so much. I thought it was very effective, I agree that it was a bit more simplistic, but I don't think it was simple minded or primitive. If the director had decided to use a narrator to explain everything that went on in Kitty's mind, I would call that primitive.
