That's a very abstract, surrealist view, but that's really what it feels like.
It's similar to the murder of Don Achille, who may well have been killed by a formless creature from the sewers. The lack of a definitive explanation means it can be the violence and chaos of the neighbourhood as much as anything more concrete. It's brilliant writing.
Yes, I think Lila was some kind of incarnation of the volcano, the earth or who knows what. Maybe she never existed and she was only inside Elena. In the TV series when Aquille dies and they have the funeral procession, Lila is watching in the distance laughing as if nobody is listening, is she a ghost? When she is sick at the end of the fourth book she says is like she gave birth again, maybe the spirit of Tina?
