I think they decided to leave so that they could raise the baby as their son instead of having to deal with the shame of being the offspring of the German officer.
Patriotic love or just familiarity aren’t always enough to make a living. Let us not forget how economically devastated Europe has been after the war. This could be and was a reason for many to chase the American dream. And I guess that the end of war wasn’t necessarily synonym for fearlessness and peace. Some kind of fears can’t just be put aside or forgotten. It lingers forever and I guess that the US at that time was pretty much considered as a safe haven. We need to put the story in its historical context, a context where psychological help wasn’t necessarily easily available, a huge taboo and a luxury the majority couldn’t afford.
So I don’t think the reason of their emigration was the disgrace surrounding her pregnancy as no one outside her family knew. The conception preceded the return of Antoine by little.
