It's only in the movie, it's for narratory purposes.
This is only a small problem in terms of dialog in the movie Vs the book. It was a great opening (movie) line and made for a great segue to the opening scene. There were other examples as well. Remember, while the screenplay (for the film) deviated from the book, Kaysen was ok with it. The book was the book; the movie was the movie. Here is a good example of why reading a book which then develops into a screenplay/movie it critical to get what the author said/means Vs the movie folks telling. And, it's not always that bad. Great book; great movie.
