I agree with your assessment about the ending in the book...it left me with a sense of hope even though it was sad.
Only parts of movie I recall liking compared to book are the twins, hot wheels clicking down the hallway, and the reams of manuscript of his play reading "all work and no play....." Guessing animating topiary would have been cost prohibitive and difficult back in the day, piece of cg
