This: When it comes to literary stuff being alienating to most readers... I sort of see reading as being alienating on its own. Reading selects for people who're willing to do a certain amount of work to get their art/entertainment, since the difference between a reader and a listener or viewer is that readers don't just have to pay attention or interpret what they're paying attention to, they have to *perform.* So that eliminates a lot of people right off.

Is something that feels absolutely true, but has never occurred to me before. So I'll be thinking about it for a long time. Thanks very much for responding -- I do get a good amount of comments on my weblog, but rarely anything so thoughtful. Is this (your comment) something you can post somewhere on your website? It looks as though it's not set up for traditional blog-like entries, so maybe not. I'm going to point a few people to it here.

Jason Howell Thanks for making me think also. Maybe I can find a way to repost this exchange with your link included. On my site or another platform. Lemme think about it. You can feel free to take it and do whatever you want with it too. I don't mind.

I'll think about how to do it too, then.
