I agree that the line " when, one day, he looks at the small bump that will alway mar the bridge of Jacksnose and wanted to trace it, gently, with his finger," does imply that they became a couple. If Nath's dreams do come true and he goes to Harvard, the possibility of a relationship seems far fetched. How would their paths cross. Nath wants to escape small town Ohio and never return. Harvard is his ticket. Jack is almost a high school dropout. Being together makes for a nicer ending.
