As an old curmudgeon, I doubt the author -- a Millennial -- thought that anyone reads books except on their Kindles. After all, tattoos and comic books play a nearly sacred role in this tale.
Considering the protagonist is only sharing her perspective, who is to say what was, or wan't going on? Her focus was music and acting as a pass time, and reading the plays to prepare for the performance. Are we that used to seeing so much of the world at once, via the internet, that we fail to see the point of this book? Life is happening somewhere else, right at this moment, for someone else, and it's not a life that's like yours, at all.
Even as an old curmudgeon, your suspicion that the "Millenial" author doesn't care about books is asinine and insulting. She *WROTE* a book! And a good one!
Generation blaming is tired, and it's lazy thinking. No reason at all to resort to it.
Millennials read more than either of the two older generations before us. Baby boomers read the least and watch the most television.
The Severn City Airport scenes mention the gift shop books and newspapers being burned for fuel, if I recall correctly.
You did realize that they were performing the plays of Shakespeare, no?? Do you think everyone in the symphony had committed his works to memory before the collapse? Of course books were mentioned!!
Also, old curmudgeon above- I'm ancient and I have millennial kids. My kids read a lot. I actually know very few folks in general who read excessively. I've read 55 book this year and people act like that's incredible- when, in fact, I think I'm a bit of a slacker in that regard. My millennial daughter has read more in addition to the huge amount of reading she has done for work. People, in general, don't tend to read all that much. Do not bash millennials. I hate generation bashing. I hated it when I was a kid in the 60s and I hate when boomers, like me, do it. We should know better than that.
