Currently reading it and I could not agree more with your comment, especially regarding the dialogue b/t the Fredric and Catherine. Stilted is the perfect word. Speaking as one...no woman alive speaks so sparingly! haha
When he jumps into the river to escape reminded me of Steve McQueen (Great Escape) - some kind of action hero!
