I just finished it last night and it was the first question I had. Loved the book but there was a big hole at the end regarding how they got to America. I was also sure that first pilot was going to reappear in the book and that's why I kept guessing it was Isabelle who was narrating and not Viane. Great book but I almost felt like the author rushed at the end. I can't believe the move to Oregon wasn't explained better.

I don't think Sophie had children. In the last chapter Vianne reflects that Sophie stayed close to her, Vianne, all her life, and when Sophie died Vianne was with her and Sophie thought she saw Isabelle. No husband or children around.

I didn't think that Sophie thought her mother was Isabelle. I thought she was looking into her future after death and saw Isabelle there to take her. You often hear stories of people on the verge of death "seeing" people who have gone on before them, and I thought that's what was happening here.

I agree with Gloria. They were both talking about those who had already died and would be waiting for them on the other side.
