It would have more emotional impact, too, if you were familiar with the characters, particularly Rhodry.
You should definitely read the books prior - they're fantastic, I should know, having read them and enjoyed them most thoroughly. There's nothing like immersing yourself into Deverry...Thanking you Katharine, for many years of reading pleasure xxx
Actually, thank YOU. A lot of work went into them, I'm getting to understand that even more now that I'm working on my own novels :)
