message 1: by Carol (new)

Carol Elliott Using the science of -- we are born and then we die, maybe Vonnegut used the term more in this novel (extensively!) as he was also expressing that he rarely showed emotion. Pilgrim rarely showed emotion, in business life, personal life, in time travel or while in the trenches. On page 252 it states that he cried quietly and then further quotes a Christmas carol which ends with, "No crying he makes." To me, the term was to mean succinct emotion and feelings of hopelessness to change outcome. Insulation.
