Thanks for this answer Christa! I read it for the first time this week, and had NO idea what I was getting into so about 2/3 of the way through the first section I started looking for non-spoilery info to decide if I could jeep going. Found your answer promising it wasnt all in Benjy's head, finished it yesterday and now LOVE the book! All thanks to you/this answer. Thanks again!
There is a later edition of the book, with a sort of clarifying epilogue. This is by far on of the best books I have ever read.
