Amber I agree with the way the romance was handled, and that it's much more interesting to read well written female characters, That being said, I think the reason so many people like these books aren't JUST for the romance. I know my personal reading preferences, but if i find a world and a story that's captivating enough, I'm willing to look past the poorly written romance and enjoy the rest of the storyline. And since this sort of romance IS so prevalent in YA, it gets hard at times to find anything besides that- especially with Fantasy YA,
Enjoying the book series, and enjoying bad romance plot lines don't necessarily go hand in hand. People can enjoy the book as a whole without being obsessed with the romance.

@Eris: Everyone is entitled to having their own opinions. Attacking somebody because they have an opinion for a specific book is ridiculous.

Personally, I think that the author could have done a little more for this book. Her character is underdeveloped and annoying, and has a tough as nails personality which is over the top and completely unbelievable. This book does not have any sort of world building, which is one thing that I would love to see. Alina is a Mary Sue who has special abilities that were never discovered when they ought to have been.

It's like reading Harry Potter fanfiction where the author has their OC going to Hogwarts only when their magic was discovered at the age of 16 or 17, Yet, the canon specifically states that their magic would have been discovered in early childhood.

That is how I feel with this book. Alina's special abilities were discovered in her teenage years when something of this nature would have been seen in her early childhood.

There's a lot that the author could have done with this, and the fact that this book doesn't meet the high level that I was expecting, makes me suspect that the author wasn't very serious about this book.
