Thanks, Melissa. I like what you said about leaving wiggle room in the plot and gently herding your characters toward the finish. Like herding cats, but in a good way! I don't think I've heard it described like that before. Also, when you said flat characters didn't surprise you, that clicked with me. I think that's one reason the mystery I read was so disappointing, even though written by a well-known & well-regarded mystery author.
