judith But it wasn't Matthew's fault, so why take it out on him? Matthew's loyalty wasn't sudden, Lily had allowed him to get back into the family business & knew he couldn't just walk away. She was irrational.

Debhirsch Emotions aren’t rational. I wouldn’t say she was “taking it out on him” although he did bear the brunt of it. I think she just felt so betrayed, understandably that she couldn’t continue to be enmeshed with her mother or his family. Again because he had spent so many years distancing himself I would’ve thought the decision would’ve been to go with his new family -His wife loved dearly and his son who I’m also sure he really loved. Anyway, I found that decision hard to understand.

judith He wasn't the rebellious kid Lily met so many years ago anymore, he was a mature adult who had been running the family business for a long time, & Lily had allowed it. So when this happened, she was wrong to issue an ultimatum instead of negotiating some kind of compromise.
