Steve King Hello Philip----Thanks for responding. When I first read The Magus back in '73, I was completely bedazzled by it and in fact still am---a truly magic book!! Too bad the movie was so poor. It took me two times to read The French Lieutenant's Woman but by the second time, I really thought it was a great book too. Fowles is quite an author. Have not read the others but want to. Stay in touch! Steve

Philip Dodd What I liked about John Fowles is that he wrote in a way that reminded me of the novels of Thomas Hardy while being experimental at the same time. A Maggot is a strange book. Though rooted in the English novel tradition, it breaks away to become very experimental indeed. Like Thomas Hardy, I like his skill in describing landscape.
