I just started reading and didn’t know it would be so depressing. Has such high ratings I’m guessing it gets better?
It's incredibly interesting & well-written & deserves the high ratings, but the tone is set at the beginning & doesn't change. The characters have moments of offbeat humor & joy in the present, but their backstories drag them down all the way to the very end.

Me too, the blurb was misleading... I'd actually call it character-driven literary fiction & I loved the writing, it just kept getting better & better!
