I love the title of the book, btw. It is actually what peaked my attention first before I read a review. It is very evocative!
I wondered the same thing. I also wondered about the comment "everything looks perfect from far away" which is probably older or more generic than the Postal Service song "Such Great Heights," but I wondered if that was the source.
