Yes, it made her seem like some kind of narcissistic sociopath, her reaction when he told her what he had done.
Yes she seemed completely unethical and so desperate to be loved it was also a difficult point for me and a great weakness in her.
I think that's the point of the novel--it sucks us in and makes us empathize with a murderer and his emotional accomplice. Brilliant!
The way she reacts to finding out Maxim murdered Rebecca makes it hard to root for either of them - they even changed it in the movie to where Maxim kills Rebecca by accident. But it pays off in the book because while they are still together at the end, they lose Manderley and have to live in exile, which doesn't sound like a great life as the narrator describes it in the beginning; more like a kind of purgatory, which they deserve.
