Fons Jena Thank you for your suggestion! Since you informed me I've read some reviews about it and it seems to be pretty much what I'm looking for. From what I can see it is in the same lines as Tainter's 'The Collapse of Complex Societies' which is a good thing because I enjoyed that one very much. If you have to choose between Guns, Germs and Steel and this one, which one would you choose? Thanks!

Gaby Parenteau I know i am answering way too late but i'm gonna do it in case someone else would be interested. I prefered archaeology of politics and power for two reasons: first of all, Diamond's book is outdated on some subjects (like when he speaks about genetics). Second, gun germs and steel is an all public book made to be an easy and intelligible reading, politics and power is more scientific, wich means that statements made are quoted and you can then check the source for a better comprehension of perticular points, but i don't think it would be difficult to read for someone who does not have to much prior knowledge of the subject.

Fons Jena No problem, it is never too late :-). I just bought Guns, germs and steel because it seemed to be a good starting point (and more accessible). I had to try at least one Diamond book so this is the one. Anyway, if I want more after reading Diamond's book I know what I have to read next.
