I like this interpretation, but then why (view spoiler)[use the past tense "I lovED you." I think his anger and sense of betrayal were real. And if he thought the photograph was enough for them to be found by the bridge then it would be enough to be found by the Ministry and I don't think he would have endangered Margaret like that. In my book, which was the hardback, the note was reproduced in handwritten type font and the line ‘of course I loved you’ the d was crossed out so it said of course I love you. Maybe he thought enough time had passed they wouldn’t be monitoring her mail? And that it was obscure enough to pass if they were monitoring it? I Agree that it is open to interpretation.
😁😁 I listen to a lot of audio books and read a lot of kindle books. This one I just happened to check the physical book out of the library. Lucky I did 😜
